Closure of the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership
November 1, 2016
We are sad to announce that SYFP is closing. The ‘Forest’ which has been worked on woodlands and environmental projects since the early 90′s has become another victim of the cuts.
For the past few years there has been a budget shortfall, this is partly due to the Forest being entirely dependent on external funding, particularly European funding, whereas when it started up there was a direct grant through Government agencies and the partner local authorities. Brexit and the uncertainty about the future relationship between the UK and the EU has also contributed.
Although new funds have been raised this year to support development of Low Carbon projects there is still a small budget shortfall and SCC have now unfortunately had to terminate staff contracts.
This also means that the Gift That Grows community tree planting project is coming to an end.
All of the Community Forests have faced financial challenges in recent years but in some places there have been different local solutions.
