Flying the flag for regeneration
November 13, 2007
Flags were flying at key Sheffield development zone, Parkwood Springs recently, as local people swarmed up the hillside to celebrate the re-visioning of the area with an art installation and fire performance depicting a phoenix rising from the ashes.
The hilltop site, which rises up from Kelham Island – the industrial heartland of Sheffield city centre – is one of a number of ‘Creating a Setting for Investment’ (CSI) test sites being used to quantify the connection between economic and social vitality and quality landscapes.
CSI, a transnational Interreg IIIb project led by the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership is gathering evidence from work carried out at investment sites in post-industrial areas across Europe. The resulting report will build a strong case for making quality landscapes, green infrastructure and community engagement a prerequisite for economic development policy and practice, it is due to be released in 2008.
