18/02/08 Barnsley University Centre joins forces with South Yorkshire Forest to celebrate success of 'total recycling' programme

A crack team of environmental activists from University Centre Barnsley targeted the Potters Hole Plantation at Tankersley this weekend planting 33 new oak trees on the site to celebrate the success of the first period of the centre's commitment to total recycling.

In just 3 months the University Centre managed to divert 33 industrial size bins of waste from landfill and into recycling schemes. To celebrate this significant effort the team behind the Total Recycling programme decided to get involved in the South Yorkshire Forest's 'Branch Out' project and plant one new tree for every bin load that didn't get dumped into the ground.

The University Centre team led by Josie Harvey joined the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership on Saturday February 16th to put the trees in the ground. Fifty further trees were planted - all sponsored by individuals seeking to improve their local environment through the Gift that Grows tree sponsorship scheme.

Maria Wilding from the South Yorkshire Forest commented: "These trees will make a valuable contribution to the plantation at Potters Hole. The site is an ancient, semi natural woodland; it is really important for both wildlife habitats and the visual landscape that we keep planting on these old sites to ensure the long term continuation of the wood. New trees are also vital in the effort to slow climate change as they lock carbon up, preventing it from getting into the atmosphere."
