01/02/08 The 'rubbish' date that your valentine will love more than flowers

Following the success of the community tree planting at the ex- tip site in Beighton last year, the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership is planning a similar event this February. People from all over Sheffield have sponsored more than 300 trees through the Gift that Grows scheme run by the South Yorkshire Forest, and there's still time to sponsor a tree in time to take part in the event.

The scheme's co-ordinator, Kerry Bennett commented: "The planting day is not until February 23rd, which means there's time for people to sponsor a tree as an unusual valentine gift, then, they can come along together and plant it. It might be a date on an old rubbish tip but it's very romantic really - kind of giving your love roots - trees do last much longer than a bunch of flowers!"

The Beighton tip site has been in the process of regeneration for the last few years, and will eventually be a beautiful natural area of woodland and open green spaces with access for the public and links to Shire Brook Valley nature reserve.
